Profit margin vs markup

Profit margin is the share of the selling price you keep as profit: (price − costs) ÷ price. Markup is how much you add on top of your cost: (price − cost) ÷ cost. They describe the same sale from different sides — a 50% markup is only a 33% margin — so mixing them up is one of the most common pricing mistakes.

To price for a target margin, divide your total cost by (1 − margin). For example, an item that costs 600 with a 40% target margin should sell for 600 ÷ 0.6 = 1,000. If you also pay a percentage fee on every sale, subtract that too: price = cost ÷ (1 − margin − fee). This calculator does that for you.

Fees add up quickly. Marketplaces and delivery apps often take 10–30% of every order, which can wipe out most of a small seller's margin. Selling directly — through your own catalog and WhatsApp — keeps that money in your business.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good profit margin?

It depends on the product. Handmade goods, cosmetics and clothing often run 40–60% gross margin; groceries and electronics are much thinner. What matters is that the margin covers your time, overheads and growth.

What's the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of cost. A product that costs 50 and sells for 100 has a 100% markup but a 50% margin.

How do I calculate the selling price from a margin?

Price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). With fees: price = cost ÷ (1 − margin − fee rate). Switch the calculator to "My selling price" to do it automatically.

Should I include delivery and packaging in costs?

Yes, if you pay for them. Add them under "Other costs per sale" so your margin reflects what you actually keep.
